Day One – BUNBURY GOLF CLUB

A perfect day weatherwise and a perfect score for Ron, playing to his handicap. He was pleased with his efforts off the tee, but the rest was inconsistent. A bit like the rest of the field on the day that the GBW Melbourne Cup was run and, yet again, won by Brian … well done Pinky!

Walks opened the event with an NTP on the 10th … great shot and it set the standard with his short stuff for the rest of the round. If he hadn’t “blown” the last hole on each 9 he would have won.

Macca tired at the end and also blew his chance of finishing on top of the podium and, to show his frustration, his club “apparently” slipped out of his hands due to a sudden spasm of arthritis in his thumbs. Denno was back to his absolute best with his dry sense of humour and showed glimpses of achieving his goal of catching Ron’s handicap!!

Pinky and Phil both lamented the number of bunkers guarding all greens and the fact that the greens were so hard … good high approaches to the greens were not rewarded as most times the “run” saw the balls race off the back of the green. Phil was obviously leaving his defence of the title for a “good run home”, using another Melbourne Cup racing term.

As for Tom, other than a magical birdie after a 90 foot putt, according to Tom … actually 30 foot … like Phil and Scobes, made the wrong podium. All were in the bottom 3!!

Now, what do we say about Chris? His putting was all at sea and, if he had picked up just 7 of his wayward efforts, he would have won. Never to be outdone, he excelled at etiquette (as usual). Where to park the carts … how to “correctly” mark your cards, etc etc … but, as they say in racing terms … “watch out for the bolter”!

Day Two – COLLIE GOLF CLUB

Another perfect day for golf and, to top things off, we were cordially welcomed at Collie by the staff and simply outstanding greens.

The watery grave for Chris (2 balls) and Scobes (1)

The first group, unbeknown to them, would provide a remarkable result with all four bettering their handicaps, with Ron, Dennis and Jacko scoring 38, with Tom just off the mark with 37 … amazing! Obviously all four played pretty well, but like all golfers they still wanted to play better … who says our handicapping system doesn’t work?

The highlight in the foursome was Ron’s birdie on the only Par 3 on the back 9. An unusual hole, playing just over a hundred metres, but fully grown trees about 20 metres from the tee. Ron’s 2 for 5 (a first for him) ultimately sealed a win for the day.

The next group were led by Pinky, with a creditable 33 and along the way he cleaned up Macca in the first round of the match play, played over the last nine. Macca had a forgettable day, which had nothing to do with cards the night before!!

The defending champ, Phil, proved his consistency with his second 28 in a row.

Jacko: "I think I'll contact Steve and ask him to make up new signs for bunkers . . .
Acrod Parking Only!!

Wow, the greens were as good as Collie! The rain stopped and another perfect day, and Les led off the first with the longest drive ever seen on the first hole at one of our favourite courses … BUT what was to unfold after that was straight from Hollywood. Les lost his ball into the water … BUT … drum roll … Ron drove his motorised, sit on hired buggy into the bunker!!!

The Pro Shop was contacted and the rescue team arrived with a replacement buggy and, fortunately, no damage to the cart or the player (other than pride).

Ron and Chris were locked in battle approaching the last hole. Chris needed to win the last hole by 2 strokes and he did!

Scobes, also in the last group, managed to stick with his partners for his third round over 30 and complete the podium position.

Tom, Pinky and Les apparently were there for “the hunting” (old GBW term), but Les did manage to equal, at the time, the score of the holder of the prestigious cup.

Walks, Phil and Macca enjoyed the sunshine and Phil managed to miss scoring 28 by one point, which would have given him a hat trick of 28’s.

The win gave Jacko his second Binningup Open, winning in 2015.
